Award Winners

"Out of the Gate" Award
Pueblo County School District in Colorado

The "Out of the Gate" Award went to Pueblo County School District in Colorado. The district began using MealpayPlus in January 2009 and was able to reach 15% participation in the first seven months of use. These are fantastic results considering that the national average for the first year is 7%. The district promoted MealpayPlus via the district website, school websites, and newsletters.

Innovation Award

Kentwood Public Schools in Michigan

Kentwood Public Schools in Michigan received the Innovation Award for its creative approach to improving line speed. The district designated one of its serving lines as a “cashless fast lane” to eliminate the cash handling that slows things down. It took students an average of eight minutes to go through the cashless line, as opposed to 13–14 minutes in the traditional line. The cashier in the cashless line served 235 lunches where she had previously served 80–90 lunches in the same time period.

MealpayPlus Participation Award

Petal School District in Mississippi

The MealpayPlus Participation Award went to Petal School District in Mississippi. The district has been using MealpayPlus approximately 51/2 years and consistently keeps its teachers, principals, and staff informed about the program as well as includes information in its welcome packets at back-to-school time and for new students. Petal School District is at a 33% participation level and had an all-time high of 40.4% in September of this year. The national average is 14%.

Best Practices Award

Pascagoula School District in Mississippi

Pascagoula School District, located in Mississippi, received the Best Practices Award. The district has seen a significant reduction in losses from shrinkage and waste, along with improved end-of-year inventory values, as a direct result of using Horizon’s back office solution. The first year that every school used Horizon’s Inventory Management module, the district’s end-of-year inventory went down $27,811.66, which is about 10%. The next year it dropped another $8,586.27. Pascagoula continuously looks for ways to improve business practices and sets the standard for many in the region.
