Networking Events
Horizon is always pleased to offer events throughout the Users Group Conference which allow attendees a chance to relax, visit with colleagues, and just have fun. These informal events provide a great opportunity to network with other industry professionals outside the classroom environment, and it's also a good time to meet several members of the Horizon staff.
I had SO MUCH FUN on the zipline!! It is something that I've wanted to try, but never found the time. Who would have thought that an educational conference would be the place I finally did it?!
The Tuesday night events during Horizon's Users Group Conferences are always a crowd pleaser— the first time during the busy day that everyone has a chance to really relax and visit with colleagues.
This year, in keeping with the fun-filled, high-energy festivies of the past, Horizon is pleased to offer Casino Horse Racing.
Casino Horse Racing is a unique, exciting, highly interactive stage show with lights, sound, and a lot of action.
The announcer's exciting presentation of the races, a well-decorated stage, lights, music between races, and the sounds of a real horse race underscoring each race... all combine with the prize drawing at the end of the evening to create an experience guests will not soon forget!
The 2012 Horizon Users Group Conference introduced several new afternoon activities in which attendees could participate, conveniently located within the Lake Lanier Islands Resort. We're bringing back the very popular ziplining and boat ride, and we're adding hiking and Masterpiece Mixers. And for those of you who'd rather head into the city, do your own thing, or just cool your heels, of course, there's the option to choose none of these activities
Be sure to choose one of the options when you register. Participation is limited in each activity, and registration is first-come, first-served.
Here is more information on the activities to be offered:
- Boat excursion around Lake Lanier
Enjoy a 90-minute scenic tour around Lake Sidney Lanier. Relax with colleagues and enjoy the beautiful scenery and refreshing beverages. This is a great way to experience the natural beauty of springtime in the South. - Zip-lining around Legacy Lodge
Try out seven exciting zip lines and two sky bridges all located around Legacy Lodge. Be enchanted by picturesque views and entertained by knowledgeable guides as you breeze your way throughout your adventure.
(250 lb. weight limit)
- Masterpiece Mixers
Looking for something new, exciting and creative to do? Come join us to mix up your own masterpiece. We'll supply the canvas, the paint, and the brushes, while our professional, fun teachers will guide you step by step in creating your own piece of art that you take home at the end of the event. This fun event is designed for all levels, from "never held a paint brush" to avid artists. Beverages provided. - Legacy Limits trail hike
Legacy Limits offers the hiking buff a 1.6 mile trek around the tip of Legacy Island. This is a natural trail formed by deer and other hiking enthusiasts. It runs along the water's edge, with natural obstacles placed by Mother Nature herself. Come and enjoy the flora and fauna of a southern springtime. Hiking boots or well-soled shoes are recommended. - No activity
Wednesday night, after you've enjoyed the afteroon activities, we will meet in the media room. Comfortable chairs and a large viewing screen make for a relaxing time watching the movie, Argo. Before and during the movie, you'll be treated to beverages, snacks, and freshly-popped popcorn. And finally, movie goers will have an opportunity to win some cool door prizes.
We hope you'll join us for our final networking event of the conference!
You can watch the trailer and find out more about the movie here.

The resort was wonderful! I rode the boat around the lake, and it was sooo relaxing after a long day of classes. The weather was perfect, too. I hope it is as nice next year.

It was nice to have speakers who have been 'in the trenches' of the lunchroom like we have.
A speaker's words have more impact when you feel like they understand the issues you face day in and day out.
Jim Hemmen is currently the Child Nutrition Services Director & Executive Chef for Roosevelt School District in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, he is a member of the adjunct faculty staff at the world-renowned Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he has taught hospitality business classes and shared his industry experience since 2003.
Jim has over 30 years' combined industry experience, holding a variety of positions. During this time, he held significant leadership roles with large hospitality companies servicing Fortune 100 companies in Arizona and the Pacific Northwest, and he owned and operated a successful restaurant and a gourmet food development company that practiced "farm to table" concepts for a over a decade. He now maintains a consulting practice that coaches small businesses to practice many of these ideals and to develop success principles. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hospitality Management from Washington State University.
Jim recently embarked on designing and leading the district to develop a five-acre property into a sustainable food distribution facility, culinary instruction lab, wellness and nutrition education center, and a living-edible landscape. This project has created a gathering place for students, parents, educators and the community to learn about healthier lifestyle practices and enjoy fresh highly nutritious meals together.
Jim’s passion for hospitality and culinary arts are what drive him to succeed and to get up every day to serve those around him. People who know him will often hear him say, "Some of life’s best moments are experienced sharing great food and beverages with people who you love, who inspire you, and who uplift your spirits."
Linda Stoll, MPH, is currently the Executive Director of Food Services at 86,000-student Jefferson County School District, Golden, Colorado, and has worked in the school nutrition industry since 1983. Prior to Jeffco, Linda served as Director of Food Services for Boulder Valley School District, CO and Director of Nutrition Services for Mat-Su Borough School District in Wasilla, Alaska.
Linda’s approach to innovating her school nutrition programs has earned her peer and industry recognitions over the years. Hiring an executive chef and doing more quick scratch cooking, conducting focus groups to better understand student demands, working with local companies to create new products, and partnering with schools to run the student stores and vending machines are a few creative solutions she has implemented.
Most recently, Linda was recognized as Food Service Director of the Month for May, 2012 by Food Service Director magazine. In 2011, she was named as winner of SNA’s Silver Leadership Award, which recognizes a director who demonstrates outstanding leadership, dedication, fiscal achievement and innovation in menuing/merchandising.
Linda received her Master of Public Health from Loma Linda University.
Joanne K. Kinsey has been a professional educator for thirty-five years. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees are in Home Economics/Vocational Education. After teaching school four years, she accepted a position as Director of School Food Service for the Camp Lejuene Dependent Schools at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Ms. Kinsey has been active in Child Nutrition Programs in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, the New England area and currently Virginia.
After serving in numerous management capacities, Ms. Kinsey created her own firm, THE KINSEY KOMPANY. She has presented seminars and workshops covering a wide range of topics in management, personnel training and nutrition education. She has also conducted research for large food companies in relation to the school food service market.
Mrs. Kinsey works closely with the Child Nutrition Foundation (CNF) serving as a national trainer for numerous educational programs. She also provides technical support for the National Food Service Management Institute located in Oxford, Mississippi. During her time in Pennsylvania, Joanne served as a Master Instructor for Project PA. This initiative is a joint food service training program between the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Penn State University.
Joanne participated in several People to People Citizens Ambassador delegations with the School Nutrition Association visiting South Africa and China. She traveled to El Salvador as part of a medical mission team in 2008 and 2009. As a result of her travels, she remains active in the international effort to promote child nutrition partnerships around the world.
Joanne is very active in the School Nutrition Association (SNA). She is a past president of the state associations in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. She served as Northeast Regional Director and the Education Chair on the SNA Board of Directors.
Joanne is Director of School Nutrition Services for the Chesapeake Public Schools. The district has 47 schools with a student enrollment of 40,000 in grades K-12. The Chesapeake Public Schools School Nutrition Program was recognized in November 2010 as a District of Excellence by the School Nutrition Foundation.
She has been featured in School Foodservice and Nutrition magazine (May 97, April 2010) under “Profile of Success”, Food Service Director Magazine (Feb 98, May 2010), and numerous other publications for her innovative school programming. She was named the Outstanding Food Service Director of the Year for the state of Pennsylvania for 2003-04 and Virginia 2010. She also received the 2006 Lauretta Woodson Award for exemplary service to the Allentown School District and Citizens of the Commonwealth of PA. In 2009 she received the FAME Golden Star Award for Foodservice Director of the Year. In May 2010, Joanne was recognized with the prestigious Silver Plate Award (Elementary/Secondary Schools) from the International Food Manufacturers Association.

Subject: Improving my Understanding and Usage of our Horizon Software Solutions
Dear [put your manager's name here]:
While we have already benefited from using Horizon's technology solutions, I have an opportunity to further improve the way I use their software in our day-to-day operations. I believe that by attending the annual Horizon Users Group Conference this year, I will have the opportunity to bring back new ideas that will help us efficiently and effectively deal with our operational challenges in a positive way.
The 2013 Horizon Users Group Conference will focus on the following areas:
- Generating revenue with Horizon solutions
- Increasing participation with streamlined processes
- Reducing waste and controlling costs
- Improving food safety
- Providing systems training and SNA CEU credits
- Encouraging new ideas through networking
By surrounding myself with industry peers, Horizon staff, and their vendors, I will gain a better understanding of how Horizon solutions can help our organization increase revenue and reduce costs, which in turn will allow us to provide better service to our customers.
In order to maximize this investment, I will be happy to prepare a follow-up report which shares what I have learned during the conference that directly relates to the increased efficiency of our food service technology and processes. I will be glad to share this information and conference materials with the entire food service team as needed.
If you have any questions about Horizon's Users Group Conference, please let me know and I will share the conference literature with you. You can also view the conference website at www.horizonsoftware.com/2013UGC. I hope you will agree that my attendance at this training event would make a significant, positive impact on our organization.
Best regards,

Cost-Saving Tips:
With a little advance planning and some online research, you can find ways to save even more money and improve your chances of justifying your attendance.
- Register early. Register on or before 12/31/12 and take advantage of the lower conference rate.
- Don't go hungry or spend a fortune on meals. All full-conference registration packages include breakfasts, breaks, lunches, and dinners.
- Save on rental cars. Shuttles will be provided between the airport and the conference center at various times on Monday and Thursday.
- Fly airlines that are offering special rates. If you book far enough ahead, you can sometimes find discounted flights that will result in significant travel savings.
- Earn continuing education credits.
Post-Conference Reporting
Commit to your manager that you will prepare and share a conference report with him or her and your team.
Examples of information you might include in the conference report:
- Executive summary of key themes, concerns, ideas, and practices discussed
- Keynote session highlights
- Specific breakout or session highlights
- Two or three detailed ideas from the training classes that will impact your day-to-day usage and/or processes
- Networking event takeaways (new contacts, why they are important, who will follow up and when)
- Program ideas or recommendations picked up or thought up while at the conference

I was very impressed with how smoothly the conference ran. Never having been to Atlanta, I was worried that I might get lost. Fortunately, I knew where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to do all along the way.
Driving

7000 Holiday Road
Lake Lanier Islands Resort
Buford, GA 30518
Located north of downtown Atlanta, take I-85N to I-985N to exit 8 (Lanier Islands Parkway). Follow the signs to Lake Lanier Islands Resort. Or take GA 400N to exit 14. Go East on GA 20, turn left on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and left on Lanier Islands Parkway.
Airport Shuttle Pickup
Shuttle times to and from the airport will be announced closer to the event time.
If you are flying and planning to utilize one of a shuttle, please send Julie Denmon your flight information as well as your cell phone number as soon as possible so that she may coordinate capacity needed for each shuttle. It will be of great help to the drivers if we can provide them with your cell phone numbers. They will already have your flight information, but cell phones help a great deal in the event they need to contact you.
In the event you miss the first shuttle, please notify Strictly Business Limo Services that you will catch the next available shuttle.
Airport Shuttle Departure
Horizon will also provide a shuttle run from the hotel back to the airport on Thursday, March 28.
Shuttle times will be announced closer to the event time. You will be instructed where to gather at least 15 minutes before departure.
Atlanta Airport Information
We will make every effort to make your shuttle transition as smooth as possible. For those who have never ventured through the Atlanta airport, below are a few helpful facts you should know:

I enjoyed the Product Fair. At first, I didn't think I would learn that much, but listening to each of the vendors made me start to think of ways we can improve in the future.

Horizon has partnered with SMART Temps to offer an integrated temperature management solution, TempAlert. TempAlert is the only wireless temperature management system that is seamlessly integrated with menus and production records to ensure Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) compliance. Food temperatures are automatically submitted to production records, helping clients meet all HACCP reporting requirements with ease and eliminating the tedious chore of hand-written temperature logs.
TempAlert also helps food service operations avoid costly food losses by continuously monitoring temperatures in freezers, refrigerators, milk coolers, and storerooms, and sending alerts via email, text, and/or phone if temperatures are not in the proper range.
