Carolina East Medical Center, formerly Craven Regional Medical Center, is a 350-bed facility located in picturesque New Bern, North Carolina. Carolina East is equipped with sophisticated surgical suites and leading-edge diagnostic and therapeutic services to provide care for the more than 160,000 patients who trust the facility with their health care each year.
Carolina East's dining venues consist of a cafeteria with three serving lines and a grill with one serving line. Hardy Jones, the Director of Dining, felt his operation was losing revenue due to the cash-only policy required by the facility’s previous system. Also, the previous system did not offer the flexibility and accountability needed to keep up with changing demands.
Hardy turned to Horizon’s RX Point of Service (POS) system to improve his operation by providing flexible payment options, including the payroll deduction and invoicing features.
RX is a state-of-the-art meal plan management and point-of-service system that has features to meet the requirements of any dining facility configuration. The system supports point of service for fine dining, cafeteria, casual dining, catering, and takeout. Plus, the system allows the integration of all POS functions into an organization-wide solution. In addition to dining locations, Horizon’s system can be easily set up to accommodate any retail situation, including gift shops, convenience stores, coffee carts, and more.
Horizon's RX system includes features to help facilities like Carolina East manage the operational challenges unique to health care organizations. Meal plans, house accounts, visitor meals, employee meals, department charges, and special events are easy to create, set up, and operate. RX allows health care facilities to offer a full range of meal plans and payment options such as declining balance with prepayments, inclining balance for payroll deduction and invoicing, as well as credit card and cash sales.
The payroll deduct feature acts as a credit or incline account in the RX application. This basically means that, during a two- week pay period, an employee can accrue charges and the amount can be deducted from the employee's paycheck for that time period.
As the Director of Dining, Hardy enjoys the results of being able to offer flexible payment options.
“The payroll deduction module within RX has increased sales and revenue by at least 20%,” Hardy said. "And, less cash handling equals faster line speeds."
Carolina East has also been able to increase employee satisfaction. “The employees appreciate the convenience and flexibility the system offers,” Hardy said. In fact, 55–60% of his employees are now using the payroll deduction option, and that percentage increases every month.
Hardy is also looking into future enhancements such as scanning barcodes for prepackaged items rather than using the menu grid. This will allow him to better track how well an individual soft drink is doing rather than looking at a generic 16-ounce bottle and not knowing the specific brand. He said, "It's important to know what volume was sold of Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, etc."
Hardy also looks forward to implementing additional Horizon solutions, like smart- enabled Healthy Vending, to further improve his operation. Horizon's Healthy Vending will allow employees to use their payroll deduct account, in addition to cash, for vending purchases.Currently, the vending machines are cash-only, so the added payment option could potentially result in increased revenue similar to what he saw from offering payroll deduct on the standard POS lines.
Carolina East is excited about the increased revenue and employee satisfaction resulting from implementing the RX system, as well as the outstanding customer service Horizon provides.
Hardy is very pleased with his decision to move to Horizon’s RX system. "We are very happy with the response time, friendliness, and knowledge of Horizon's tech support staff,” he said.
